Causes of vision impairment

Through the eyes, a person receives most of the information about the surrounding world, so even a slight deterioration of vision significantly affects the quality of life. You should not ignore the symptoms, because they can be a sign of processes that require early treatment.

Causes of vision impairment in adults

  • Excessive use of gadgets. Prolonged work with screens overloads the visual system, contributes to dry eyes and fatigue.
  • Dry eyes. During concentration, a person blinks less often, the tear film breaks down faster, discomfort and blurriness appear.
  • Incorrect lighting. An excess or deficiency of light causes the eyes to work with overstrain.
  • Unbalanced nutrition. Lack of vitamins A, C, D, E and other substances negatively affects the state of the visual system.
  • Harmful habits. Tobacco, alcohol, and other toxins impair blood supply to tissues and work of the nervous system.
  • Violation of posture. An incorrect position of the spine can affect the blood supply to the brain and the speed of signal transmission.
  • Stress and fatigue. Lack of sleep and constant stress affect the nervous system and eyes.
  • Injuries and age changes. Burns, foreign bodies, head injuries, infections, and changes after age 40 can gradually or dramatically impair vision.

What to do if the vision drops sharply?

Gradual changes often go unnoticed because the brain adapts. A sharp deterioration in vision causes discomfort and may be related to overload, but if the symptoms do not go away after rest, an ophthalmologist’s consultation is required.

Call your doctor right away if you experience pain, cutting, grittiness, redness, tearing, crusting, spots, diplopia, decreased vision, or worsening twilight vision. Additional symptoms—headache, tinnitus, nausea, or weakness—may indicate a cause outside the eyes.

How to prevent vision impairment?

  1. Follow a balanced diet with a sufficient amount of vitamins.
  2. Take breaks while working at the computer.
  3. Perform simple gymnastics for the eyes.
  4. Work with proper lighting.
  5. Use safety glasses when working with the risk of injury.
  6. Have a preventive examination by an ophthalmologist at least once a year.

Modern ophthalmology has conservative and surgical methods of correction, but early diagnosis gives the best result.
